Dr. Julien Carrier joined the Department of Linguistics at the University of Kentucky in 2024. Prior to his arrival, he was Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario). His main areas of study are formal syntax and variationist sociolinguistics, and his work seeks to understand how quantitative methods can shed light on questions in theoretical linguistics. His research currently focuses on the Inuit-Yupik-Unangan languages, in particular Inuktitut varieties, and he has conducted linguistic fieldwork in several Arctic regions of Canada. He has worked on various linguistic phenomena, including morphosyntactic alignment change, agreement, information structure, topicality, referentiality and new-dialect formation.
